The Hindu Prarthana Samaj Temple
The Hindu Prarthana Samaj temple was established in the ‘70s.
One of the oldest temples in North America is the Hindu Prarthana Samaj Temple. Over the past half century, it has served the Indian diaspora in Toronto. In 1886, the Ruth Street Presbyterian Mission was built on the site of the temple, one of the earliest Presbyterian churches in the area. In 1979, the Prarthana Samaj congregation officially acquired Fern Avenue Church of Christ after a series of name changes. These name changes coincided with the renaming of Ruth Street to Fern Avenue.
As a result, Hindu Prarthana Samaj wants the former church building to be converted into a temple.
